At 1,300 feet, the pilot felt the engine ?sputter?. Pilot indicated the he immediately turned back to the airport. Pilot stated that the ?engine quit over pinemont and 290? Forcing the pilot to land. An inspection of the aircraft at scene was performed by the reporting inspector. The plane made contact in a grass area where the right main landing gear broke and continued sliding on its left main landing gear and right wing tip until stopped at the parking lot. The aircraft was resting on the left main landing gear and the right wing tip. Right wing tip lower surface was scratched. Propeller tips were bent backward. Spinning of the propeller revealed no engine compression or resistance. Further examination revealed no pistons movement when the crankshaft is turning. The crankshaft broke between the propeller flange and the front cylinder. Engine oil was within capacity. Fuel tank was ¾ its capacity. A records check was performed. Engine last inspection was conducted on April 25, 2014. An entry on the engine logbook indicates that the engine was overhauled on June 30, 1987 after being on storage since 1957. Another entry indicates that on 2005 at 1,049 hours engine total time the engine was installed on aircraft N101JY when the aircraft was built and certified. Further examination of the engine will be performed.
