What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
An inflight fire was reported in an aft galley oven. The flight crew declared emergency, and then diverted to Halifax Stanfield airport, nova scotia(yhz). An overweight landing was accomplished and the aircraft taxied to the gate where the passengers deplaned normally via the jet bridge. There were no reported injuries to passengers or crew.
It was reported that two fire extinguishers and a protective breathing equipment pbe were used inflight. Galley oven R53 was removed by contract maintenance for a detailed inspection of the oven. Initial assessment by maintenance indicates that the damage was confined to the oven internal fan area with signs of overheating. It has been confirmed that a fire was visible. The oven was deferred per the minimum equipment list (MEL) for a position ferry back to Washington dulles international airport (iad). The overweight landing inspection was accomplished with no findings. The passengers were transported to brussels, belgium (bru) on another aircraft.
The oven was sent to heath tecna for evaluation to determine the source of the fire. The vender reported that they were unable to determine the source of the fire and smoke. The oven has been sent to the manufacturer (b/e aerospace) for further inspection.
As the result of the united certificate management office (cmo) investigation, the following concerns have been identified: 1. The cmo is looking into a report by the flight attendants that they had significant difficultly in removing and activating the pbe. 2. The cmo is also looking into the flight attendants apparent lack of awareness of united?s oven firefighting procedures. The results of the cmo investigation will be reported in ptrs # 201405356.
As the FAA filed it
AN INFLIGHT FIRE WAS REPORTED IN AN AFT GALLEY OVEN.
