From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Upon departure from rwy 24 at hky, pilot described a loud 'bang' and engine power loss. Aircraft crashed approximately 1/2 mile from airport in residential area. Aircraft impacted a single tree causing the left wing and engine to separate from the airframe. Examination of the engine revealed a hole in the crankcase inboard of the #2 cylinder and below the left magneto. The left magneto separated from the engine and had a single impact point which aligns with the hole in the crankcase. Pilot and one pax described a slight tapping sound during preflight run-up but could not determine if from radios or engine. Aircraft was destroyed.
