From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Contacted the pilotprivacy data omitted. privacy data omitted Stated the following narrative of the accident:

The aircraft is normally based at his hangar located at bayport aerodrome (23N). He took off from this airport with two other similar aircraft. The purpose of the flight was strictly for personal pleasure. The three aircraft stopped for fuel at brookhaven airport (khwv) and continued their flight to Westmoreland Airstrip (FAA identifier: 49NY).

The aircraft landed on the south end of the runway 18/36. He landed on the numbers. He stated that the runway is a grass strip and crowned at the south end. During the rollout, he relaxed on the stick (control yoke) and the tail wheel popped up off the ground. The top wing (bi-wing aircraft) was full of fuel (approximately 40 gallons) and the CG of the aircraft moved forward and the tail wheel began to rise even more. At this point, the propeller struck the ground, pulling the aircraft in the nose down condition and flipping straight over. After the propeller struck the ground, the engine came to a sudden stoppage. Pilot stated that there were no skid marks on turf runway, however he did tap/utilize the brakes which could have exaggerated the tail wheel lifting off the ground.

Initial reports by police investigators stated that there were no injuries. privacy data omitted Explained that he received medical treatment at stony brook medical hospital and was airlifted off Shelter Island. He received small cuts and bruises. He was admitted overnight in the hospital and was released the next day.

Through a cursory inspection of the aircraft damage and additional damage stated by the owner, the following damage was found:

Propellers q-tipped

Engine sudden stoppage

Top wing wrinkled (possible structure damage under fabric)

Rudder (including associated structure) crushed

Elevator (including associated structure) crushed

Vertical fin (including associated structure) crushed

CONTACTED THE PILOT^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ STATED THE FOLLOWING NARRATIVE OF THE ACCIDENT:

^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ EXPLAINED THAT HE RECEIVED MEDICAL TREATMENT AT STONY BROOK MEDICAL HOSPITAL AND WAS AIRLIFTED OFF SHELTER ISLAND. HE RECEIVED SMALL CUTS AND BRUISES. HE WAS ADMITTED OVERNIGHT IN THE HOSPITAL AND WAS RELEASED THE NEXT DAY.

THROUGH A CURSORY INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT DAMAGE AND ADDITIONAL DAMAGE STATED BY THE OWNER, THE FOLLOWING DAMAGE WAS FOUND:

PROPELLERS Q-TIPPED

ENGINE SUDDEN STOPPAGE

TOP WING WRINKLED (POSSIBLE STRUCTURE DAMAGE UNDER FABRIC)

RUDDER (INCLUDING ASSOCIATED STRUCTURE) CRUSHED

ELEVATOR (INCLUDING ASSOCIATED STRUCTURE) CRUSHED

VERTICAL FIN (INCLUDING ASSOCIATED STRUCTURE) CRUSHED
