From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Pilot in command, ^james albert Board^, ^spent 6 years building his^ experimental aircraft zenith CH601 hd, N740JB. On the day of the accident, Sunday, August 09, 2015, ^mr. Board^ drove N740JB from his residence ^7030 KY highway 1247^, standiford, KY 40484 to stuart powell field (kdvk) in danville, KY. ^mr. Board^ at kdvk installed the wings on N740JB. He then ran an extensive engine run-up and all indications appeared normal. This was ^mr. Board's^ first flight in a zenith aircraft, and was the first actual flight for N740JB. ^ mr. Board^ departed runway 30, which is 5000 feet long. The takeoff roll was 2500 feet before rotation, and the climb to traffic pattern altitude, 2000 feet MSL, appeared to be normal. Around traffic pattern altitude, the engine was creating normal power, but the amount of thrust was not sufficient to maintain altitude. ^mr. Board^ struck a utility line then flew approximately 345 feet before striking a group of trees outlining an open field.
