From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On October 27, 2015, around 14:00 CDT, N40368 was landing at gillespie county airport (T82) in Fredericksburg, Texas. The pilot, who is owner/operates of N40368 under the provisions of FAR part 91. Was on a personal flight under VMC without a flight plan. The flight originated from (5XA6), a private grass airstrip in menard county Texas, prior to departing 5XA6, he stated he reviewed the metars at T82 for the previous 4 hours. The prevailing winds were from the west and there were no reported wind gusts.

>>> On approached to land at T82, the pilot stated AWOS indicated winds at 250 at 7 KTS. Runway 32 was the active runway with several aircraft departing. On final approach, pilot stated he established a stabilized approach with appropriate trim and flap settings. Aircraft was in good alignment with the runway centerline with the left wing in position to correct for the crosswind from the left. The left main contacted the runway, followed by the right main and tailwheel. He maintained the stick position to keep the left wing down and pulled the stick full aft as all three wheels contacted the pavement. As the rollout began, a wind gust pushed the tail to the right causing the aircraft to turn left. Rudder input was ineffective. The aircraft exited the runway in a loop to the left, and as it exited, the right wing strut contacted a PAPI light box. This caused an abrupt stop and the aircraft tipped over onto the prop. The engine was immediately shut off. The aircraft was subsequently righted and towed to a temporary hangar.
