From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

The pilot stated that he and one other person were on a local flight when at about 15 miles from kset he heard a bang and saw smoke and oil coming from the engine. After the pilot went through his checklist he called st. louis approach and declared an emergency. The pilot reduced the power from 26 inches of manifold power to about 18 inches. He headed back to kset. When he landed he could not see because of the oil on the windshield and went off the runway. No damage to the airport or the aircraft. The pilot contacted st. louis again to let them know they were on the ground safely.

A mechanic found the number 9 cylinder part number 399359 was cracked around the exhaust valve port. The cylinder was replaced.
