What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
The accident pilot reported he was enroute from owyhee airstrip (28U) to harvey airfield (S43) when he landed at Ontario municpal airport, Oregon (ono), for fuel. The pilot reported light gusty winds out of 28U and reported calling ASOS on the 135.275 frequency at Ontario before landing on rnwy 32. ASOS reported the winds to be 10 KTS.
A review of historical weather data from the national weather service showed average winds at 9.3 with gusts up to 27 from 270 degrees.
During landing rollout, and at approximately 20 mph, a gust of wind blew the aircraft right and the right wing contacted the runway. The pilot, caught unaware, stated he overcorrected causing the left wing to contact the runway with an ensuing ground loop.
The aircraft was examined and found to have extensive spar damage to the left wing, scraping on the right wing tip, bent prop blades, and twisting damage to the left gear leg. No other obvious damage was noted.
The aircraft was found to be in good mechanical condition otherwise, with a current registration and a valid airworthiness certificate.
The accident pilot was counselled on regard to visual cues versus relying solely on weather reporting. The pilot exhibited a cooperative and positive attitude during the investigation.
