What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
On November 22, 2016, during an instructional flight, N7158S sustained minor damage during a hard landing. Weather conditions at phjr at the time of incident had the winds at 060 11 knots with gusts up to 20 knots, both the CFI and student were comfortable with these conditions.
The student was performing pedal turn maneuvers at phjr, when the student decided to perform a 360 degree left pedal turn, before the maneuver the CFI reminded the student the purpose of each flight control, emphasizing the pedals for the maneuver: left pedal to accelerate / right to decelerate the rate of turn.
The student started the left pedal turn by applying left pedal, he encountered difficulty to maintain a constant rate of turn (due to the wind pushing through the tail boom and the stabilizers), when the helicopter reached the point of a straight tail wind, the student did not anticipate that the rate of turn would be accelerated and maintained a large amount of left pedal. The helicopter started to spin fast and even with the CFI?s right pedal input the condition did not change because the student was blocking the pedals by applying a large amount of left pedal. The CFI verbalize "I have the controls" and pushed the cyclic forward to reduce the rate of turn with the vertical stabilizers.
As the helicopter was still spinning the CFI closed the throttle and the left front skid touched the ground. Simultaneously the CFI applied aft cyclic to level the helicopter and lowered the collective to reduce the lift. When the helicopter was on the ground, the CFI started the shutdown procedure.
The impact broke the left skid just forward of the cross tube junction.
As the FAA filed it
ON NOVEMBER 22, 2016, DURING AN INSTRUCTIONAL FLIGHT, N7158S SUSTAINED MINOR DAMAGE DURING A HARD LANDING.
