From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Airman was returning to home airport during initial solo cross country. Airman had difficulty finding the airport until he recognized the interstate nearby. Airman entered traffic pattern 1500 feet above traffic pattern altitude and on base leg to runway 01. Airman attempted to land from a steep approach with higher than normal airspeed. Airman touched down 1500 feet from approach end of the runway, bounced into the air approximately 10 - 15 feet, and then attempted to straightened the airplane prior to touch down by lower the left wing. Airplane likely touched down a second time in a nose high attitude, with a high sink rate and with left wing low. Left wing tip struck the ground and aircraft continued to veer to the right off the runway and into the grass. Aircraft came to rest in a ditch which is located 50 -75 feet from and parallel to the runway. Aircraft was facing east. Substantial damage included wrinkled firewall and broken motor mounts. Left wing tip dented and one propeller blade bent.
