From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On March 25, 2017 at approximately 0945 eastern standard time (EST), N2878N, a Piper PA-28 arrow sustained minor damage after landing gear up on runway 18 at Terre Haute regional airport, hulman field (huf), Indiana. The airplane is registered to Indiana state university and was operated under the provisions of 14 CFR 91. The pilot in command, a certified flight instructor (CFI), and a student reported no injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the incident. No flight plan was on file or required. The flight originated from huf.

The instructor and student told investigators they failed to extend the landing gear while practicing a simulated engine failure maneuver to runway 18 as part of the 14 CFR 141 school curriculum. The simulated engine failure became a distraction for both pilots by disrupting the normal traffic pattern and procedural flow. The student said they attempted to complete the landing checklist by memory instead of using the actual checklist during the simulated emergency. Although they were practicing an engine out maneuver, the power was set above 13" of manifold pressure which prevented the landing gear aural warning horn and unsafe gear light from activating. Indiana state university contract maintenance personnel performed the landing gear aural warning and gear unsafe light test. The system tested satisfactory per the aircraft maintenance manual.

As the FAA filed it
