What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
On July 4, 2017, at about 2100 eastern time (0100Z), a parachutist was seriously injured in a parachute-landing incident at pioneer park, Mooresville, Indiana. The parachutist missed the intended landing zone and landed on a parked car resulting in multiple broken bones. The person was hospitalized due to non-life threatening injuries. The parachute jump was being conducted under the provisions of 14 code of federal regulations (CFR) 105. The Mooresville weather was visual meteorological conditions(VMC) with winds coming from the north to northwest.
The parachutist estimated he was 200 feet east of the landing zone at an altitude of 150-200 feet as he made a right turn to final into the wind toward the landing zone when the incident occurred. The parachutist stated as he turned into the wind to line up with the landing zone he noticed his forward motion was slower than compared to the previous turns into the wind. Five to ten seconds later, he lost forward motion and dropped to the ground with no control of the parachute canopy. He said he suspects a wind gust or a downdraft could have been a factor in his landing incident. He said he has six previous jumps at this location.
The parachutist attended a parachute safety day annual training event on April 1, 2017. He also participates in practice sessions and jump rehearsals throughout the jump season. His uspa class d pro rating is valid until March 31, 2018. His packing records show the main chute was packed on July 2, 2017 and the auxiliary chute was packed July 1, 2017.
This report will be ammended when the parachutist personal statement is recieved.
