What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
On August 10, 2017 at approximately 1600HRS local time a Rockwell International, model S2R, N4971X, lost directional control after landing on runway 10 at Salem municipal airport, Salem, Indiana. The sole occupant, a commercial rated pilot, failed to maintain directional control of the aircraft, subsequently the aircraft veered uncontrollably off of the runway. The pilot was not injured. The aircraft and property suffered minor damage. The aircraft is registered to and operated by precision ag air services LLC, air operator certificate #2MOG, CFR part 137. Day VMC conditions prevailed.
At approximately 1600HRS local time the pilot returned to the airport to pick up the last load of chemical. The pilot performed a normal approach and landing. During roll out, he applied the brakes, within a matter of seconds the left brake failed and the aircraft veered uncontrollably to the right. This aircraft is equipped with a free castering tail wheel. The aircraft uncontrollably manuevered off of the runway environment and through a chain link fence. The left wing leading edge was damaged by a fence post and the left wing tip was damaged by the fence. The right brake linings are worn to minimum standards, the left brake linings are completely worn away, allowing the aluminum brake piston to contact the brake rotor. The left brake piston traveled beyond its normal range allowing the brake fluid to escape the brake cylinder assembly, IN turn the left brake pedal was ineffective. The pilot stated this was the fourth landing of the day and that he had been using minimum braking due to the long runway. The pilot stated that he had inspected the brakes prior to the first flight and that per the indicator pins, the brakes were in serviceable condition.
Opened a compliance action, counceled the pilot and mechanic on pre-flight operations and brake inspection/maintenance.
