From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Piper PA-28R-180, registration number N3873T was operating under part 61, performing a check-ride for rental of N3873T. A CFI and commercial pilot were preforming a touch and go, the commercail pilot applied full power for take-off, the aircraft responded initially and began to climb out about half way down the runway. The aircraft climbed up to around 100 feet when the first sign of engine failure occurred, at this point the pilots heard the engine in an idle phase and quickly noticed that they were no longer maintaining heading or climb rate. The CFI applied full throttle and all levers in the forward position and engine thrust came back momentarily and the aircraft began to climb again to maybe 200 feet but engine quickly lost all thrust again. CFI decided to land the plane straight ahead on the remaining runway 09 and that we quickly proceeded off the end of the runway into the grass field at the end of runway 09.
