From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

Description

Aircaft was in cruise from when a passenger notified the cabin crew of some sparks and smoke coming from the sidewall panel under bin location 13 ab. There was a noticeable burn mark on the sidewall panel and a smell of smoke. The flight deck was notified the pilots initiated the smoke drill and decided to divert to another airport.

Several caution lights illuminated that were all related to the #1AC electrical system. A mayday was declared, ATC was notified and the decision to stop on the runway and execute a rapid deplanement was made.

The aircraft landed in a controlled manner, engines were shut down and electrical power was turned off then the deplanement was executed in a controlled manner. Fire crew entered the aircraft and carried out initial inspections for any potential hot spots none were detected, no fire suppression was required.

The aircraft was removed from the runway until such time that the tsb was able to inspect the aircraft. The aircraft was returned to maintenance for rectification.

The ac power connector on the LH fuse armpit area was found burnt and damaged as a result of the arching that occurred in the socket. Bombardier service letter DH8-400-SL-24-016 indicates that this is a known issue with these connectors. The connector contains 3 8 gauge ac power wires from the LH ac circuit breaker box located in the nacelle. The "p" connector attached to the wires outside and inside the fuse are damaged and require replacement. The connector jack is also damaged and requires replacement.

Further inspections are currently underway and the aircraft remains onn the ground until repairs are carried out. Further updates will be added to this SDR as the information becomes available.

2018/03/13 09:47:03 privacy data omitted further inspection were carried out the following findings and actions to be taken are :

Other wire harnesses in the vicinity were inspected for damage no findings.

Insulation in the area has burn damage and will require replacement.

No visible damage to the fuselage skin in the area. Bombardier has advised to carry out ndt testing to the area, ndt is currently being sourced.

Both "p" side connectors on the ends of the 8 gauge wire and the connector jack on the skin to be replaced. The wire length is good on the outside of the fuse to cut back and re-terminate the replacement connector.

There is not enough wire on the inside of the fuselage to do this, the wires will require a splice in with extra wire length and then to add the replacement connector to the end. Splices are being sourced and the required tooling is currently being sourced.

2018/03/13 09:47:03 ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ FURTHER INSPECTION WERE CARRIED OUT THE FOLLOWING FINDINGS AND ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN ARE :
