Narrative:
On April 27, 2018 at approximately 19:45 local time, a pilot attempted a landing on runway 20 at central Illinois regional airport, kbmi. Upon initial touchdown the aircraft bounced, became airborne veering left dragging the left wingtip on the runway and striking an elevated runway edge light with possibly the boarding step the aircraft. The aircraft bounced a second time after which the pilot sitting in the right sear took control of the airplane as the aircraft departed the runway as indicated by wheel and tail scag tracks in the adjacent grass approximately twenty degrees offset to the left of the runway centerline. Take off power was added and the aircraft became airborne from the grass in a southerly direction, climbed to 1900 feet MSL and circled for a landing on runway 29 at the same airport.
Kbmi ground operations confirmed runway light damage. A spi FAA inspector spoke with the pilot and confirmed damage to the aircraft to include; a crack in left wingtip area, lower left wing tip abrasion, a crack in rudder area, a bent pitot tube, and engine oil leak. The aircraft is currently located at bmi airport at image air FBO.
