The PIC stated that he departed abraham lincoln capital airport (kspi) at around 6:15 a.m. local time on July 4th, 2018 en-route to monmouth municipal airport (C66). The PIC stated that with around 20 minutes left in his flight to C66 he had to descend from 2000 feet MSL down to 1550 MSL to avoid a layer of clouds. At around 7:00 a.m. local time the aircraft's engine began to run rough and then lost total power. The PIC stated that as he lost altitude the engine came back to life but then would gain and lose power every 20 to 30 seconds. The PIC stated that he was unable to regain enough power to hold altitude so he decided to make an off field landing. The pilot stated that he saw a line of trees ahead of him so he started to circle to find a landing site. The PIC stated that he chose a gravel road with no power lines on either side to execute his landing. After the landing, as the aircraft was rolling out, the aircraft started to veer to the left. The aircraft went into a ditch next to the road where the left lower wingtip struck the ground and caused the aircraft to flip over.
