From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On takeoff from omena bay in Lake Michigan, the pilot in command (PIC) attempted to avoid the larger waves at the mouth of the cove. Unable to do so, the PIC made a 180 turn back into the wind and caught the right wing in a wave that caused damage to the wing, and tore off the sponson. The PIC then proceeded with the takeoff in fear that the aircraft would roll over if stopped, due to the missing sponson. He then continued with the flight to Newberry, Michigan (kery), and prepared to land the aircraft. The landing gear on the aircraft would not extend after several attempts. The pilot then landed the aircraft on its belly on the grass strip.

Weather report at traverse city (ktvc) airport at 1853Z was: wind 360 degrees at 06 knots, visibility 10 statute miles, clear, temp 74 f, dew point 48 f, and altimeter 30.42.

As the FAA filed it
