What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
On 7/16/2018 I was made aware of an incident that initially occurred in serpentine hot springs , Alaska on 13 July, 2018. At 1600 hours, 16 July, 2017 I was made aware of a landing incident of an experimental aircraft, N307TP on city field (94Z) in Nome, Alaska. City field is a gravel landing strip 2 miles south of the Nome airport (ome). The aircraft had requested landing there as the pilot had reported that he had lost his tail wheel. I drove over to city field to look for the aircraft. Nome flight services noted that the pilot had not called in his down time and asked if I would contact them. I found the aircraft at city field, with a 18 inch 2X4 tied to the lower portion of the fuselage where, I assume, a tail wheel was once located. I called Nome flight services and reported the aircraft had been located and landed safely, but that the pilot was gone. The pilot had told fs that they were going to Alaska airlines to recover parts for the aircraft. I examined the aircraft, took pictures and drove to the Alaska airline terminal to look for the pilot. I found the pilot and interviewed him and his passenger. He had left anchorage on Friday, 13 July, 2018 enroute to mcgrath, unalakleet, where they refueled and then serpintine hot springs. Upon landing the pilot discovered he had lost his tail wheel assembly. The pilot had stated that the tail wheel assembly was installed and secure when he left unalakleet and that there had not been any maintenance done to the aircraft recently. The pilot ordered some parts to be delivered to Nome to repair his aircraft and return to anchorage.
