From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Aircraft N12493 departed central jersey regional airport(47N) at 0955 for a VFR 14 CFR part 91 flight. Pilot in comand and 1 passenger were on board. The aircraft climbed to 1500 feet and flew southeast and over the NJ garden state parkway bridge, heading towards sandy hook recreational area, NJ. While flying over sandy hook recreational area, the engine started to show signs of trouble and run rough and the RPM started to decrease. As the engine started to loose power, the pilot reported loosing altitude. He attempted to climb and was unable. He attempted to return to the departing airport. After he initiated his return attempt, the engine got worse. He flew towards Keansburg beach area. Circled the beach to make sure he could land on the beach without causing any harm to anyone. Once verified that the beach was cleared, he made a precautionary landing. No damage to the aircraft. No injuries to the people on board and no injuries to anyone on the ground.

While onsite, inspectors from this office noticed no maintenance records were on board the aircraft, the owner/pic agreed to bring the records to the flight standards district office for us to review.

No evidence of altimeter or transponder check were noted. Aircraft has been maintained by privacy data omitted from 3/12/12.

Aircraft was removed later that day and taken to a repair facility. The facility was contacted for update and follow up information. A full power run and inspection of the engine wiring, spark plugs and fuel system was complied with. No defects were noted or identified as causal of the engine issues. The magnetos were fuctioning properly but it was recommended they get replaced, by the repair facility, due to their age. No other issues were noted.

All inspections have now been complied with.
