From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On September 30, 2018 N52516, a Cessna 172P took off from potomac airfield (vkx) and declared an emergency due to loss of oil pressure. Engine oil bled out from the front of the aircraft obscuring the pilots view through the windscreen. The aircraft diverted to hyde field (W32) without incident. An inspection of the aircraft revealed that the front crankshaft oil plug was completely dislodged from the crankshaft. The oil plug was recovered inside the propeller spacer cavity. An inspection of the maintenance logbooks revealed that the engine was installed on 9/21/2018, with 8.6 hours time on the engine at the time of failure. A review of the crankshaft paperwork revealed that the part was newly manufactured. N52516 was taken out of service pending an engine tear down inspection before further flight.
