From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Description of deviation:

During passenger loading, a passenger walked to the rear of the aircraft, and the weight shifted unexpectedly. The tail stand shifted which allowed the rear of the aircraft to contact the ground. The pressure vessel was not damaged, and there were no injuries, but the rudder control surface required replacement.

Causal/ contributing factors:

The identified hazard was determined to be an improper passenger and cargo loading sequence which resulted in an aft center of gravity condition, and a tail strike.

Recommendations for systematic corrective action to reduce risk of future occurrence:

Corrective actions include pilot counseling on company SOP?s regarding aircraft loading; issuing a memo for the pilot read file to inform the pilot base of the cause and corrective actions for the aft CG condition; and purchasing a new caravan style tail stand to replace the original design PC-12 tail stand.
