The pilot involved was privacy data omitted, student pilot certificate privacy data omitted. privacy data omitted Was the solo student pilot of a greg Gremminger magni M-16 gyroplane, tail # N316MG, sn# 16-06-3474, crashed during take-off on runway 02 at kcgi. The aircraft landed approximately 500 feet beyond the departure end of runway 02. The pilot received minor abrasions to left leg and the aircraft received substantial damage. No ATC services were provided at the time. Kcgi control tower was closed by 1700CDT/2200Z. The weather was VFR and the wind at the time of the incident was reported on the kcgi 292153Z METAR to be 350@12KTS with a visibility of 10SM and a temperature of +28°c. the weather data on the 292153Z METAR (kcgi) was included in the FAA form 8020-9 aircraft accident/incident preliminary notice. The airport was uncontrolled at time of event and traffic was using runway 02. Runway 02 at kcgi is an asphalt runway that is 100 feet wide by 3,997 feet long and the surface conditions were dry at the time of accident. privacy data omitted In N316MG was the only aircraft in the pattern completing his supervised solo flight. The aircraft (gg magni M-16 gyroplane: tail # N316MG, sn# 16-06-3474) is owned and operated by privacy data omitted of privacy data omitted
The statement from the student pilot privacy data omitted indicated that he was conducting a local supervised student pilot solo flight. This was his second solo flight in the gyroplane. He has approximately 17.6 hours in the magni M-16 series make and model, with 1.2 hours recent flight experience in last 24 hours, 1.6 hours solo/pic time, and approximately 31.6 hours total flight experience across airplanes and gyroplanes. He did have permission from the owner to conduct the flight at the time of the incident and was completing a supervised solo. Weather conditions at the time of the flight were daylight visual meteorological conditions (VMC) and the flight was conducted within the local airport operations area. The automated weather reported at the time of the incident for kcgi was 292153Z auto 35012KT 10SM BKN075 28/12 A3002 rmk A02 SLP163 T02780122. Runway 02 at kcgi is an asphalt runway that is 100 feet wide by 3,997 feet long. The surface conditions were dry at the time of accident. privacy data omitted Stated that after 4-5 circuits in the traffic pattern he noticed the engine warning light was flashing on the downwind leg. After successfully landing, he dismissed the engine warning light for oil pressure due to the low power setting. The student pilot attempted to takeoff again and claims to have noticed a weird smell and a loss of power. He stated that he thought that he was at full throttle. He reduced throttle and came back down on the runway and did not believe that he had sufficient remaining runway to stop the aircraft. privacy data omitted Then re-introduced full throttle and attempted to take off one final time, having low airspeed and demanding more power than the engine could produce for a short take off, the gyroplane settled into the grassy overrun area at the departure end of runway 02 and then flipped onto its right side. privacy data omitted Stated that after all movement stopped, he was able to exit the aircraft with only three minor abrasions to his left lower leg.
