From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On July 27, 2020 at approximately 19:35 central daylight time (CDT), an MXT-7-180A Maule, N772TM, registered to an individual and operated by a private pilot, received substantial damage when it collided with the terrain on a private owned airstrip, north of the town of Butler, IL.

The flight was being conducted under the provisions of title 14 code of federal regulations (CFR) part 91 under visual flight rules. The flight originated from the Butler Illinois airport (1LL5).

According to the pilot, he departed Justison Airport (1LL5) at approximately 18:50 to conduct a flight to inspect the crops on his local farm. He returned to 1LL5 at approximately 19:31, and was attempting to land when a deer jumped out of the adjacent bean field in to his path. He then pulled the aircraft nose up to avoid hitting the animal, which then the aircraft stalled and hit the ground nose first. The aircraft?s nose landing gear sheared off, which then the caused the propeller to contact the ground, causing the aircraft to flip on to its back.

The AWOS weather report at litchfield municipal airport (3LF) at 19:35 CDT was: wind 180 degrees at 04 knots, visibility 10 statute miles, clear skies, temperature 28 celsius, dew point 24 celsius, and altimeter 3001.
