From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On August 4, 2020, N408GT, operating as GTI8939, from incheon, south korea (icn) to Shanghai, china (pvg) suffered pod strikes to the #1 ,#2, and #4 engines on landing. The flight was operated by a flight crew of three (3), the captain (CA) acting as pilot monitoring (pm) and two (2) first officers (fo), one (1) acting as the pilot flying (pf), and one (1) for relief.

GTI8939 landed in pvg at 18:05Z, the landing was performed by the pf fo. The reported weather at 18:00Z was wind from 190 degrees at 25 knots gusting to 39 knots, broken clouds at 1,500 feet with light rain showers.

Flight data indicates the flight flew a stable approach for runway 17L. As the aircraft touched down, multiple abrupt flight control inputs were made in the roll and yaw axis, likely resulting in the engine strikes and subsequent damage. With the reported winds, GTI8939 would have experienced a maximum 13 knot crosswind component.

The damage resulted in the replacement of the #1 engine entirely. The #2 and #3 engine inlet cowls, fan cowls, oil drain masts, and t/r cowls were replaced. The #2 and #3 engines were not replaced.

As the FAA filed it
