The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
On August 22, 2020 at approximately 1840 central daylight time (CDT), an Piper PA-24-250 aircraft, N6384P, registered to an individual and operated by a private pilot with a high performance endorsement, received minor damage when the aircraft bellied in at the Shelbyville, IL airport.
The flight was being conducted under the provisions of title 14 code of federal regulations (CFR) part 91 under visual flight rules. The flight originated from the taylorville municipal airport (ktaz) and was to end at the Shelby County Airport (2H0).
According to the pilot, he was flying his aircraft to Shelby County Airport (2H0) to store the aircraft in a hangar. On his final descent, he crossed midfield west to east for left down for runway 18. He thought he had pulled out and down on gear lever and had gear deployed and thought he had a light but it may have been sun shining on the light. During the flare stage of the landing, a stall light illuminated and a warning horn sounded at same time, thinking that the warning horn was a stall warning, which the aircraft is not equipped with. The aircraft the descended onto the runway on the bottom of the fuselage and the propeller hit the runway. He first thought his landing gear had failed and then realized the landing gear had never extended. Also, stated by the pilot that a second check to ensure that the gear was down and locked was not accomplished.
The AWOS weather report at taylorville municipal airport (ktaz) at 1535 CDT was: wind 00 degrees at 00 knots, visibility 10 statute miles, clear skies, temperature 27 celsius, dew point 17 celsius, and altimeter 2995.
