From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On 09/01/2020 Piper archer N28011 registered to privacy data omitted. Ran off runway 22 during landing and sustained minor damage , the student pilot was the only person on board the aircraft and did not sustain any injuries .

The student pilot stated that he was on his solo cross country flight and made a left down wind for runway 22 at Gila Bend airport(E63) he had acquired weather information from luke air force base and the reported the wind 240 at 10 KTS. The pilot stated the his flaps were set at full and the aircraft power was at neutral and he crossed the numbers at about 60 KTS. , he put the mains down first and then the nose which immediately can back up he put the nose back down but the aircraft veered off to the left , the pilot tried to compensate with left rudder and right brake but ran off the left hand side of the runway in to a sage brush and a small berm which broke the nose landing gear off at the engine brace.

Besides that nose gear there was no additional damage and the pilot was uninjured.

Additional training that will be conducted by privacy data omitted

? A ground briefing to review stabilized approach criteria, go around decision making, effects of cross wind during landing and proper cross wind landing technique

O have this be a 2 hour ground briefing

? Two session in the redbird cross wind trainer to review proper cross wind control input during landing.

O minimum 2 hours total, 1 hour per session. Longer is fine also

? Two remedial flights to review proper cross wind landings.

O try and strategically due these in the windiest part of the day, or on days that are going to be windy.

O go and perform the landings at small runways (AK chin etc)

? If anything different comes from the preliminary roi I will adjust this as necessary
