What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
On September 4, 2020 at 18:56 eastern daylight time (EDT), a Cessna A185F aircraft, N185DK, registered to privacy data omitted and operated by a private pilot for a personal flight, received substantial damage when it ground-looped while trying to land on runway 20 at antrim county airport (acb).
Visual meteorological conditions and variable winds prevailed at the time of the accident. The private flight was being conducted under the provisions of title 14 code of federal regulations (CFR) part 91 without a flight plan. As the aircraft came in for landing, the pilot noted mild turbulence and some variable wind. The pilot referenced his garmin GPS for wind data and elected to land on runway 20. The aircraft landed and received a gust of wind that caused a ground loop. The left wheel sheared off and the landing leg dug into the runway until the left leg sheared off at the fuselage. The aircraft slid off the runway into the grass causing the left wing to hit the ground and damage the spar. The pilot and passengers exited the aircraft out the right side of the aircraft without injuries.
Weather was reported at acb 9/4/2020 winds 280 at 8 knots, variable 250 to 310, 10 miles visibility scattered at 5,000 feet. Temp 20, dew point 07, alt 3001
Examination of the aircraft accident photos and statements received from the pilot revealed that as he came in for landing he failed to correct for the variable wind conditions resulting in the ground loop.
