From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On 9-5-20 at 14:30 local, a PA28-140, N41989, received minor damage when it ran off the end of the runway at Dee Jay Airport, Ono, PA, during a botched takeoff attempt. The pilot and 2 passengers were not injured. The pilot stated the aircraft had no mechanical issues prior to the takeoff attempt and was making full power. The pilot stated that the 2 passengers asked for a ride and he decided to take them. According to his calculations, the 3 occupants and 15 gallons of fuel was just under gross weight. The runway surface was dry grass, with a slight rise in terrain to the west. The pilot decided to takeoff to the west, as there was an intermittent wind from that direction. The pilot set flaps 10, leaned mixture for maximum power and began takeoff. He rotated at 55 mph, and became airborne but could not accelerate or climb without touching the ground again. He continued off the airport, over a soybean field, where the drag of the crop touching the tires rapidly slowed the aircraft. He pulled the throttle to idle and touched down, and rolled down a small incline into a drainage ditch at low speed. The nose wheel and propeller were damaged. Engine mount and aircraft structure were not damaged. Pilot towed aircraft back to hangar to begin repairing it.

As the FAA filed it
