From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

An aircraft suffered minor damage to landing gear components, and the wing strut as well as damaging a visual approach system indicator (VASI) light when the aircraft exited runway 10 at West Chicago/dupafe airport (kdpa) in crosswind conditions.

On October 10, 2020 the pilot in command of a Cessna 172 N7669G made a touch down on runway 10. The pilot reported a strong gust was experienced directly after touchdown which raised the right wing and caused the pilot to lose control. The aircraft lurched to the left, the right main lifted off the ground and the nose gear was not firmly on the ground yet. The pilot attempted to apply right rudder but without the right main gear or the nose tire firmly on the ground he had limited effectiveness of the controls. The aircraft vacated the prepared surface of the runway on the left side and rolled on the grass and subsequently hit the VASI system causing damage to the light and the aircraft.

The pilot then taxied back onto the prepared surface, and continued to taxi back in coordination with ATC clearance to the flight school where the aircraft was rented. The pilot was advised by dpa air traffic control to call the tower on the phone.

The pilot in discussion with air traffic control stated that the pilot and the two passengers on board were not injured and that he believed that there was no damage to the aircraft or the airfield.

Airport operations later discovered the damage to the VASI light system and the minor damage to the aircraft on October 12, 2020 and informed dpa ATC, and the chi FSDO.

The aircraft wing strut and right main landing gear strut were repaired by the flight school and the aircraft has been returned to service.

As the FAA filed it
