From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On November 12, 2020 at 1130 local time, a vans RV-9A experimental aircraft, N847RS registered to and operated by a commercial rated pilot, received minor damage during hard landing at the Baldwin municipal airport (7D3) Baldwin, Michigan. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the incident. The personal flight was being conducted under the provisions of title 14 code of federal regulations (CFR) part 91 without a flight plan. The pilot and single passenger were not injured. The local flight originated from the riverview airport (08C) jennison, Michigan at approximately 1000L.

According to the pilot, he had been practicing instrument approaches by flying to manistee (mbl) then to Baldwin (7D3). During the simulated VOR approach into Baldwin runway 27 the pilot states he was to fast on the final approach and the aircraft bounced on landing. The pilot elected not to abort and continued attempts to salvage the landing. Following the initial bounce the aircraft started to porpoise until the nose gear collapsed and the propeller struck the runway surface. The aircraft then skidded to the left of centerline and stopped near the side edge of the runway. Both occupants egressed from the aircraft unaided. The ELT did not trigger during the incident.

Photographs show the aircraft setting on its nose cowl with the nose gear assembly still attached, but folded back and to the left. Propeller remained attached to the crank shaft with both tips bent aft. No other damage could be determined. The pilot states there was no mechanical issue with the aircraft prior to the incident.
