On November 29, 2020 at 1350Z N980G, a Piper PA-28-181, landed on runway 23 at Morristown Municipal Airport (mmu). The airplane veered off the runway to the right grass area during the landing rollout. The lower part of the right wing, between the wing root and the wheel, struck a runway light. The damage was inspected by an A&P mechanic who reported ?inspected RH wing for damage. Identified light scratching and scuffs within tolerance of Piper SL1095B ok to return to service.?
A student pilot on a solo local practice flight operated the airplane. The pilot reported "on the morning of 11/29/2020 I was scheduled to have my first student solo tol flight. After a warmup with my instructor everything went well and I proceeded to begin my solo. My first 2 approaches were executed within regulations and were performed in a safe matter. On my third lap after a stable approach and touch down, I lost directional control of the aircraft and exited the runway off to the right. The aircraft struck 1 runway light with its right inner wing causing minimal damage to the aircraft and breaking the runway light. The aircraft came to a complete stop facing the runway approximately 15 ft away from the runway. The location was approximately right in the middle between taxiway hotel and taxiway golf. I power secured the engine following the appropriate checklists and tower alerted me that an operations vehicle was on the way. I was able to exit the aircraft unassisted as they approached. Shortly after another vehicle arrived and towed the aircraft back to the ramp.? The student pilot also stated that he used uneven braking during the landing rollout.
No injuries were reported. ATC reported weather as wind calm and 10 statute miles visibility. The pilot did not report any pre-existing mechanical failures or malfunctions of the airplane.
