From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On June 9, 2021 at approximately 1236 CST, a cub crafters CC11-160, serial number CC11-00376, registered as N424Y, experienced a ground loop while landing at Crystal Lake Airport (5M5) and partially departed runway 31.

The aircraft was being operated with privacy data omitted in front seat and CFI in rear seat. The purpose of the flight was for transition training as required by pilot's insurance company.

Pilot had flow about 3 hours in this aircraft over a two-day period and made 11 uneventful take-offs and landings prior to this incident.

All landings on June 9, 2021 (prior to the incident) were on grass/soft-field. This was the first landing on hard-surface of the day.

Pilot's approach speed was fast and he performed a slip to correct. Pilot flared and touched-down uneventfully. At about 15 mph, the aircraft began to fishtail. CFI applied right rudder to correct and pilot applied left brake. The aircraft ground looped to the left and partially departed the runway. The right landing gear collapsed causing right wingtip to strike the ground.

Neither the pilot nor CFI were injured.
