From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On the evening of June 15, 2021, privacy data omitted (PIC)declared an inflight emergency prior to safely landing at Williamsburg Jamestown airport (kjgg). He was acting as pilot in command of N2972R, a PA28R-200, s/n: 28R-35357, registered to privacy data omitted. privacy data omitted Propeller began to uncontrollably overspeed 7 miles north west of kjgg at 3500 feet MSL. Several minutes later as he approached the downwind leg of runway 31 at kjgg the engine emitted a loud bang accompanied by smoke in the cabin and a burning oil odor. The engine had lost significant power, but remained running. The PIC executed a normal landing, rolled off the active runway, and shut down the engine. Upon safely exiting the plane (no injuries) the PIC and first responders noted smoke emitting from the cowling. On scene FAA inspection revealed an engine crankcase failure(hole) above the number one cylinder. The root cause of the failure and what components failed could not be determined due to the scope of the field inspection.
