What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
Aircraft was flying approximately 75-100 feet above an open field. Family members were in neighborhood adjacent to the field videoing the flight. The video shows aircraft flying to the west, then pull up and turn to the left. During this turn the aircraft enters a steep descent, left wing low and impacts ground hard. The engine can be heard running in video.
A second video showing the left turn during the flight, indicates the aircraft was in a steep left turn (possibly exceeding 60 degree limit of wing) before entering the steep descent into the ground.
The aircraft was a weight shift control aircraft. During wreckage exam at crash site. Damage was consistent with aircraft impacting ground in a nose low left wing down position. Identified one ?control cable? Broom strawed indicating failure under stress. Not able to determine if it broke on impact sequence or prior to impact. NTSB retained cable for additional testing. Found a bolt head sheared off located near wing, laying on the ground. The location this bolt came the trike structure appeared to be homemade or fabricated. I was not able to determine the exact weight of the structure on scene. The published maximum gross weight for the wing is 1060 lbs. The police report indicates one person was 200LBS, and the other was 225LBS.
Aircraft was not registered, and pilot from was never identified during the examination on site.
Did not hold any certificates. Passenger was not affiliated with aviation at all.
As the FAA filed it
AIRCRAFT WAS FLYING APPROXIMATELY 75-100 FEET ABOVE AN OPEN FIELD.
