From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Aircraft was operating under 14 CFR §91 on a training flight. Student and instructor were doing touch & goes on runway 13 at mandan municipal airport (Y19) when the left main landing gear (lmg) strut failed. A low pass over the local FBO confirmed the lmg had become detached from it's housing and was hanging from the aircraft. The CFI chose to divert to nearby Bismarck municipal (kbis) for the longer runway and available emergency services. The aircraft veered hard left upon touchdown but remained upright . Damage was limited to the left wing tip and right main landing gear leg. No injuries to CFI or student.

On scene inspection of the aircraft revealed the left main landing gear strut had been improperly assembled during maintenance causing this failure.
