What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
On August 18, 2021, at approximately 0815 eastern daylight time, a Piper PA-18-150 aircraft, N66834, left the prepared surface of runway 15 during a touch and go landing, at the Indianapolis metropolitan airport (ump), Fishers, Indiana. The right-hand fixed landing gear collapsed inboard while on the unprepared grass surface due to an apparent side overload failure of the right-hand gear strut assembly. The aircraft received minor damage to the landing gear and the right-hand wingtip area.
During the on scene investigation and interviews with the pilot in command, the pilot stated they landed on the centerline of runway 15, the main gear and tail gear had settled and the aircraft was rolling out. The pilot increased power for the take off phase, when the aircraft began veering left. The pilot attempted to correct with rudder input and was not able to correct, before the aircraft left the prepared surface of the runway. The pilot stated that he may have been dragging the left-hand brake at the time of the event. Physical evidence at the scene supported his statement with a black tire skid mark present from approximately left of runway centerline to the end of the prepared surface along with markings on unprepared surface.
