From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Investigation: I was notified by Torrance ktoa air traffic control that on September 17, 2021 at approximately 1700 local at the ktoa airport, N815YK did not comply with a safety requirement and failed to lower the landing gear prior to and upon landing.

Root cause analysis (rca): this nonconformance was due to the pilot following ATC instruction to change runways at the last minute. The pilot, became distracted and failed to put his landing gear down prior to landing. There is no gear warning horn in the CJ-6 but the gear down indicator was working properly. The pilot stated that he always used the ?gump? Checklist (gas, undercarriage, mixture, prop) but the last minute change of runways and his overall inexperience totally distracted him.

Corrective action: the pilot discussed the possibility of putting an ?aural? Warning system in the aircraft if he gets the aircraft repaired. Even though the investigation by the long beach airworthiness team determined that this was an incident and not an accident, the aircraft may not be repaired due to the cost of replacement parts.

Comments: I used counseling to regain safe operations. I am satisfied the pilots positive attitude toward taking full responsibility for his actions and his understanding of the importance of checklists reestablished safe operations. I recommend no further action or additional follow-up.

As the FAA filed it
