From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Newly certificated private pilot conducted a VFR flight from jzi to hxd with no pax on board. Convective weather was present west of the route. Airman statement as follows:

7/14/22 @ Roughly 1615 on final approach on rwy 21 coming into hxd I had a tail strike. Coming in on final approach I got a crosswind coming at 170° correcting for the crosswind I was applying rudder and aileron input. When I made initial contact on the runway I felt the rudder pedal being hard to move as I was trying to maintain centerline on the runway. Being unable due to what seemed like a stiff pedal, I immediately applied full power in an attempt to go around. Upon applying full power the airplane attempted to climb but was able, this sent me across the runway and through the grass, stopping on the taxiway. It was upon inspection that it was found that I had struck the tail tie down hook.

Airman experienced runway excursion (incident) as a result of this event. No apparent damage to aircraft or airport infrastructure hxd fire rescue david lilly had interaction with the airman and can testify that the airman had no obvious impairments. Airman, who is also an A&P, checked aircraft airworthiness before departing and returning to jzi. Aircraft is in a part 61 flight school at jzi. Inspector jma took initial call on the event.

Operations manager for the flight school privacy data omitted, was contacted. She was not aware of this incident from the previous date. Recommended that she have their staff mx personnel check aircraft for airworthiness prior to putting it back in service. Inspector mcmillan will conduct a ramp and records of this aircraft next week.

Probable outcome of this event is 44709 re-exam of the PIC.
