On 07/30/2022 at 0928 local time N375MK conducted a gear up landing on rwy 18 at ktyr airport. The pilot had declared an emergency and reported gear issues to ATC prior to the incident.
The pilot stated that during cruise flight north of kjso he suddenly felt a warm liquid on his right ankle. An attempt was made to lower the gear without success. The pilot confirmed with someone on the ground at kjso that the gear was not extended. The pilot then elected to climb back up to altitude to run checklists and troubleshoot. The pilot stated he attempted to extend the gear with the emerg hand pump with approximately 30 cycles but the gear would not extend. He then elected to divert to ktyr where he declared an emergency and landed with the gear up.
Investigation on scene noted damage to the under side of the airframe with propellers both bent aft indicating a prop strike. Markings on the runway indicated the aircraft touched down at approximately 470' past the threshold and skidded to rest on the thousand foot marker to the left of centerline. Evidence of the prop striking the runway five times was noted. Observations taken inside the cockpit noted the gear lever was placed in the down position and red fluid could be seen on the carpet and rudder pedals on the pilot side. A normal procedures checklist was noted in the front seat and the emergency procedures checklist was noted in a binder in the back seat. The aircraft was lifted off the runway by a crane and red fluid was noted dripping out the drain hole of the airframe underneath the cockpit. The gear was able to be released using the emerg hand pump and was forcibly locked into place by the owner.
The pilot was contacted on August 5, 2022 and asked what checklist he used and to describe how he used the emergency gear extension. The pilot stated he did not use the emergency checklist as it was in the POH in the back seat and he did not have an autopilot. He also stated he pulled the emergency extension handle out and did an up and down motion.
The pilot called on August 8, 2022 and stated that he had met with his flight instructor over the weekend and after talking with his flight instructor he realized he did not operate the emergency extension handle properly. He stated that he operated it in and out 20-30 times and did not operate it up and down and had been mistaken in his previous response. He further stated he filed a NASA report after discovering he did not operate it properly.
Inspection of gear system on 8/15/2022 noted a ruptured hydraulic line between the pressure side of the engine driven pump and hydraulic power pack.
As the FAA filed it
ON 07/30/2022 AT 0928 LOCAL TIME N375MK CONDUCTED A GEAR UP LANDING ON RWY 18 AT KTYR AIRPORT.
