From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Aircraft privacy data omitted, a Cessna 172 experienced a bird strike while operating approximately 10NM nw of the Oshkosh, WI (kosh) airport. During the flight the aircraft struck a medium to large bird causing damage to the left wing leading edge. The collision occurred while the instructor was supervising a student performing ground reference maneuvers at 800-1000 feet AGL at 95-100 knots.

While the aircraft was in a 15-20 degree right bank, the instructor looked forward and observed the bird ahead, level, and slightly to the left. He immediately assumed control of the aircraft and attempted to avoid the collision but was unsuccessful.

Following the collision he observed damage to the left wing leading edge. There were no control abnormalities, vibrations, or concerning sounds. The instructor elected to immediately return to Oshkosh for a precautionary landing which was uneventful. There we no injuries to personnel as a result of this incident. VFR conditions prevailed throughout the flight.
