From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On August 13, 2022 at approximately 1231 CST, privacy data omitted, a Mooney M20K, sustained substantial damage when it was involved in an accident in hannah city, Illinois. privacy data omitted Departed santa fe municipal airport (saf) at approximately 0639 MST with a destination of general downing - peoria international airport (pia). At approximately 1222 CST privacy data omitted contacted pia approach control approximately 26 miles west of pia. Pia approach control instructed privacy data omitted to enter a right downwind for runway 22 and asked them to state their current altitude. privacy data omitted Stated that they were currently descending through 4,500 feet. At approximately 1223 CST privacy data omitted advised pia approach control that they had experienced an engine failure. Pia ATC asked privacy data omitted how much fuel they had remaining. privacy data omitted Responded that they had about 10 gallons. At approximately 1224 CST pia ATC asked privacy data omittedif they thought they would be able to make it to the runway. privacy data omitted Responded "its coughing off and on". Pia ATC asked again if privacy data omitted thought they would be able to make it to the runway. privacy data omitted Responded "I doubt it". At approximately 1225 CST privacy data omitted stated "I am over a town now so this is a good place to land". privacy data omitted Attempted to land on Illinois route 116 in Hanna City, Illinois on an easterly heading. During the approach to landing, the vertical stabilizer of privacy data omitted struck an overhead power line. After landing on the road, privacy data omitted maneuvered in order to avoid impacting cars on the road way. As a result of this maneuvering, the left wing of the aircraft struck a railing on the north side of the road. This caused the left wingtip to separate from the aircraft. As the landing rollout continued, the remaining portion of the left wing impacted a telephone pole. The impact with the telephone pole caused the aircraft to veer to the left resulting in the aircraft impacting the corner of a building on the north side of the road. After impacting the building, privacy data omitted spun around and came to rest facing a westerly direction. During the post accident examination of the aircraft, the left fuel tank was found to have been breached in multiple locations and was dry. The right fuel tank did not contain any measurable amount of fuel, but was still damp. The fuel selecter was found with the right tank selected. As of October 20, 2022, no aircraft records or pilot records have been located.
