The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
On September 07,2022privacy data omitted a C152 crashed approximately 1.5 miles north of south valley regional airport (U42) in the field at privacy data omitted after departing runway 16. There were 2 persons on board and no injuries reported.
A certified flight instructor (CFI) and student pilot were perfoming a touch and go at U42. Local weather AWOS reported wind at 150/6KTS. The student touched down on runway 16 and initiated the flow for the touch and go procedure. Flaps were retracted, throttle was set to full and carb heat was turned off, with primer in and locked. The airman reported the touch and go was as expected until reaching an altitude of approximately 200-300’AGL. The pilots experienced what was described as a significant loss in altitude. The CFI immediately took over flight controls and the airman confirmed the aircraft was configured with zero flaps, full power, carb heat off and primer was in and locked. They continued-on to trouble shoot the steady loss of altitude by checked the angle of attack using visual reference of the aircrafts attitude. They reported a normal climb attitude for the phase of departure. The pilots reported the airspeed to be 67KTS. Within the following few moments they reported entering into a wind event they could only describe as a microburst. The lowest airspeed they reported taking note of was 50KTS. They described the aircraft being pulled down with a few very abrupt shape “drops”. At this point the aircraft was being held in a takeoff attitude while descending approximately 500’ a minute. The aircraft was reported as being unable to gain altitude throughout the entire event. Upon reaching approximately 50’AGL the CFI prepared to land. The aircraft was over a sports complex with open areas of grass. The CFI cut power by closing the mixture. They also cracked the doors open for an off-field emergency landing. There was no organized sports activity going on during the time of touch down. As the aircraft was in the landing roll the CFI saw a brick wall at the end of touchdown area. After rolling approximately 300’ he used break and rudder to turn the aircraft in an attempt to avoid the solid brick wall along the north end of the sports complex. In the process of avoiding the brick wall the aircrafts right wing hit a tree and swung the aircraft around to the left and finally came to a stop approximately 180 degrees opposite the landing roll.
There were five written statements from persons on the ground that witnessed the event. They were all consistent in reporting some sort of wind event experienced by them on the ground. There are statments from persons who watched the aircraft as it was descending and reported the aircraft appeared as though it was being tossed around and “pulled” down and unable to “stay steady”. One of the hangar doors on the field at U42 airport was also reported to be blown open. On September 12,2022 I met with privacy data omitted the FBO manager at the U42 airport to watch video from September 07,2022 at 2207Z that captured the climb out of privacy data omitted. The video shows privacy data omitted on initial climb-out just after rotation. The aircraft appears to be in a normal climb attitude. At approximately 50-100 feet AGL the aircraft can be seen experiencing small abrupt changes in altitude in what appears to be turbulence. The aircraft appears to continue a climb to approximately 200-300 feet AGL. A wall of vertical dust can be seen directly in front of the aircraft’s flight path as privacy data omittedcontinues towards the area of dust it appears to be in a descent. The aircraft is moving forward in a descent towards the vertical dust line and then is no longer able to be seen in the video frame.
Maintenance records for privacy data omitted were reviewed with no negative findings.
As the FAA filed it
ON SEPTEMBER 07,2022^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ A C152 CRASHED APPROXIMATELY 1.5 MILES NORTH OF SOUTH VALLEY REGIONAL AIRPORT (U42) IN THE FIELD AT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ AFTER DEPARTING RUNWAY 16.
ON SEPTEMBER 12,2022 I MET WITH ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ THE FBO MANAGER AT THE U42 AIRPORT TO WATCH VIDEO FROM SEPTEMBER 07,2022 AT 2207Z THAT CAPTURED THE CLIMB OUT OF ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^. THE VIDEO SHOWS ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ ON INITIAL CLIMB-OUT JUST AFTER ROTATION. A WALL OF VERTICAL DUST CAN BE SEEN DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE AIRCRAFT’S FLIGHT PATH AS ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^CONTINUES TOWARDS THE AREA OF DUST IT APPEARS TO BE IN A DESCENT. THE AIRCRAFT IS MOVING FORWARD IN A DESCENT TOWARDS THE VERTICAL DUST LINE AND THEN IS NO LONGER ABLE TO BE SEEN IN THE VIDEO FRAME.
MAINTENANCE RECORDS FOR ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WERE REVIEWED WITH NO NEGATIVE FINDINGS.
