From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On 10/02/22 at approximately 0300Z, privacy data omitted, a 1959 Cessna 182C airplane, made an unplanned emergency landing in the water of lake mead, near Temple Bar, Arizona.

The pilot and single passenger sustained minor injuries and were able to safely exit the aircraft and swim to shore, where they were rescued by the las vegas metropolitan police (lvmpd) and national park service, (nps), rangers.

The pilot stated:

That they had originally departed from amarillo, Texas, on a VFR flight plan and had stopped at the grand canyon national airport, (gcn), for fuel;

That after a short stop, they departed gcn and were headed to their intended destination at the north las vegas airport in north las vegas, Nevada;

That upon reaching cruise altitude, they established communication with ATC for the purpose of flight following;

That when they were near Temple Bar, Arizona, they started experiencing engine issues;

That initially they noticed a slow decay in engine RPM in both the tachometer and the sound of the engine, coupled with a loss of indicated oil pressure;

That they advised ATC of their problem and ATC started vectoring them to a potential airport;

That shortly thereafter they determined that they would not be able to reach any suitable airport and they decided to land in the water of lake mead;

That they landed approximately one half mile from shore and the aircraft fliiped over after making contact with the water and sank shortly thereafter;

That they swam to shore, where they were rescued by lvmpd and nps.

Several attempts were made by a private recovery company and by the mohave county sheriff’s office, to locate the submerged aircraft, with negative results.

No further information is available at this time.

Investigation will be suspended until the aircraft is located and recovered.

Report to be amended.
