What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
Accordning to privacy data omitted testimony; "I was on the first cross country test flight in the bearhawk and planned a route from ktta – ksop – kscr – ktta. I checked and made sure I had enough fuel for the 75NM flight. I had about 10 gallons in both my wing tanks and 3 gallons in the header tank. This would have given me approximately an endurance of 2.5 hours. This flight would have taken me about an hour with an hour and half of reserve.
After completing the pre-flight inspection in the hangar I departed ktta for ksop and landed there. I departed ksop and headed for kscr and landed there. I immediately departed for ktta. The current wind conditions at ktta had the traffic using runway 21. Since I was on the west side of the field, I overflew the field at 2500FT for a teardrop entry to the downwind to 21. As soon as I completed the teardrop and descended to the pattern altitude my engine quit. I initially thought this could be a fuel issue and tried turning on the right tank, then realized that it would take some time for the header tank to get filled up and glanced at the left tank and saw that I still had some fuel in it. Then I gave up trying to resolve the issue and gave my complete attention to the landing as I was so close to the runway. As I was about to enter the downwind, after announcing emergency on the radio, I continued straight for the runway with the idea of taking runway 03 mid-field. After clearing the tree line I turned and tried landing on 03, but could not judge my descend rate and speed and lost airspeed about 5 feet high and landed hard. The right main wheel touched down on the grass to the right of the runway and as this was slightly at a lower level, the uneven loading put excessive force on the right landing gear and collapsed it. The aircraft veered to the right and crossed the runway and came to rest after a slow ground loop on the left side of runway 03. As soon as it came to rest I switched off the master switch and turned off the fuel valves."
