Aircraft, with one person onboard, departed culpeper regional airport (cjr) elkwood, VA, enroute to estates airpark airport (XS09), New Waverly, TX, with a fuel stop at scottsboro municipal field (4A6), scottsboro, AL. Pilot stated he departed 4A6 with 100 gallons of fuel onboard. At approximately 2100 local time, the pilot overflew estates airpark airport at 1500-FT above ground level (AGL), attempting visual contact with solar powered runway lights. The pilot started emergency procedures and climbed to 2500-FT AGL. The aircraft experienced loss of engine power and pilot was unable to restart the engine. The pilot maintained control of the aircraft through the descent on a heading of 201 degrees until impacting trees at approximately 15-FT AGL.
From initial point of impact, the aircraft travelled 243-FT descending through trees until crashing in a pasture, approximately one mile nne of estates airpark airport (XS09) and coming to rest on a heading of 036 degrees. The pilot sustained minor injuries but was able to egress the aircraft through the broken windscreen. The pilot called 911 to report the crash.
