What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
This incident involved an Aviat A-1C-200 operating under part 91. The flight was conducted as a personal flight with theprivacy data omittedPIC) and his privacy data omitted (non-pilot). During this cross country flight, the pilot wanted to perform a touch-and-go landing at Grand Coulee airport (3W7). The pilot spoke on the radio with another pilot to receive a report of the winds and based on this information, decided to land on RWY22, as the winds were not reported to be favoring one runway (the previous pilot also reported using RWY22). After touchdown, the pilot experienced what he believed was a quartering tailwind. The pilot had difficulty keeping the right wing lower to the ground and experienced a ground loop. Left landing gear failure and wingtip strike. Damage has been classified as minor, no injuries. No evidence of regulatory non-compliance, non-regulatory counseling recommended.
