What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
During landing approach phase of flight CFI took control of aircraft after engine quit. Pilot recieving instruction for currency atempted restart. Engine did not restart and CFI atempted off-field landing at school yard. Aircraft right wing struck trees. Aircraft came to rest between home chain link fence and garage wall (aircraft nose to fence and tail to garage wall).
Aircraft was nose and left wing down. Empnage was bent up and tail of aircraft was partially on garage roof fascia. One propeller blade was broke approximatey 4" from tip from the bent empnage. Two propeller blades were not damaged. Indicating no movement at time of impact with trees. Right wing leading edge was damage from impact with trees and a hole torn thru top and bottom wing surface, outboard of wing strut attach point. Nose hull of aircraft was seperated at factory seam and battery access cover was open. Left wing was bent up approximately 90 at mid point of aileron. Flap position was up but both input brackets were bent giving a split flap appearance post crash. Engine and systems remained intact. Rear engine mount structure was damaged. Master switchs were off, and ignition key was bent and in left magneto position. Fuel pump switch was in the on position. All circuit breakers in and latched. Several aircraft checklists were found in the cockpit. With angle of aircraft left wing downand nose down fuel tank showed small amount of fuel in forward left corner of tank. Placard on fuel tank left is for ground condition tail down nose up. Placard on fuel tank right is for flight condition, no fuel was observable by flight condition placard. Carberator float bowls were checked, and each had a small amout of residual fuel in bottom of each bowl. Police report was obtained, "both victims stated they thought they had ran out of fuel" victims meaning pilots.
As the FAA filed it
