What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
Narrative of the accident:
privacy data omitted Was operating VFR, landing at kgpi and departed the left side of rwy 02 after touch down. This resulted in the aircraft being ground looped resulting in damage to both wings and the propeller.
Causaul and/or contributing factors:
privacy data omitted Was cleared to land behind a small jet. The pilot reported "feeling the turbulence" produced by the jet when turning base to final and stated that he thought about doing a go-around, however, he decided to proceed with the approach and landing because he was concerned about other traffic at the airport and thought he could land beyond the touchdown point of the jet aircraft ahead of him to mitigate any wake turbulence from the aircraft.
No ATC actions contributory to the event.
No recommendations for systemic corrective action.
Action taken to correct problem and prevent reoccurance:
Compliance action – training. The pilot acknowledged that he should have completed a go-around but that he thought he could land safely beyond the touchdown point of the small jet that landed just before. The pilot has a total of approximately 28 hours in a tail wheel aircraft, 18 of which has been in the last 4 years after a ground loop accident in this same aircraft which took place on the day the pilot received the tail-wheel endorsement. The pilot lacked the experience and control touch required to compensate for the
Turbulence created by the traffic which touched down prior to the accident. The pilot will be required 5 hours of training in a tail-wheel (conventional gear) aircraft with a flight instructor completing take-offs and landing with a satisfactory endorsement from the instructor.
