When: February 23, 2024
Where: South Bend, IN (ksbn)
A commercial pilot was operating a Cessna T206H departing from prairie du chien municipal airport (kpdc) and arriving at South Bend International Airport (ksbn). The flight was conducted under visual meteorological conditions (VMC) and using visual flight rules (VFR). The nearest automatic terminal information system (ATIS) reported winds out of the north at 12 knots and overcast skies. METAR ksbn 232254Z 36012KT 10SM OVC065 05/M02 A2971 rmk AO2 SLP067 T00501017. There were no injuries to the pilot or passenger on board. The aircraft sustained minor damage.
The pilot in command (PIC) was conducting an aerial survey flight for an aerial survey company. Upon arrival at ksbn, the pilot was cleared to land on runway 27L. The pilot stated that she noted and corrected for the right crosswind, establishing control inputs of right aileron and left rudder as crosswind correction. Upon touchdown, the pilot indicated that the aircraft bounced slightly. While attempting to recover from the bounce, the pilot stated that the control input to maintain the crosswind correction was relieved, allowing the controls to settle into the neutral position. As a result, when the aircraft touched down after the bounce, the right main and nose wheel lifted back into the air causing the aircraft to veer to the left. The left wing tip scraped the ground and a prop strike occurred. The pilot attempted to recover by inputting right aileron correction, causing the aircraft to veer to the right. The aircraft came to rest on the north side of the runway, just past taxiway A2 in the grass. There was no reported damage to airport lights or signs.
A post incident inspection of the aircraft and aircraft records revealed damage to the propeller. In addition, the leading edge of the left-hand tip tank displayed scrape marks on lower surface, to include the left-hand position light. Upper and lower surfaces of the wing were checked for any unusual deformation and were found satisfactory. Nothing remarkable noted for the engine mounts or support structure. Aircraft records were found satisfactory with the exception of ELT battery expiration date. As an additional observation, the airworthiness certificate is torn and should be replaced. The left-hand inboard fuel tank shows signs of leakage at the sump. A representative for the company was notified of the findings and the requirement to perform AD 2004-10-14 prior to flight. No specific airworthiness issues noted.
